Angel Spawn

Uncovered in a small sealed crypt under the sands of the Judaean desert, Israel, this discovery has sparked much heated debate, some towards its authenticity, but most on whether it ever existed at all. The preserved corpse of a child with both angelic wings and monstrous horns disappeared soon after its claimed procurement in 1821, rumoured to have been sold on the black market. No other accounts exist until a private auction at London hall in 1885 that featured the corpse, speculated as a possible replica, selling to a collector for an exuberant price. Though brief in exposure, many of those in attendance were people of note, and talk of what they had seen spread far and wide. The common opinion of those that believed in its authenticity was that the corpse was that of an angel spawn, the progeny of the union between an angel and a daemon, a child forsaken before its creators’ trespasses would be discovered by heaven and hell.

An expedition set out from a north Karelinski village in 1908 to investigate the weird lights seen in the sky after the Event. While digging a fire pit on the edge of the fallen forest, a diminutive corpse was found preserved in the frozen dirt. Dredged up by the apocalyptic event months before, this find was only possible because upturned trees had uncovered and shattered a small frozen lake buried beneath the area. The strangeness of the corpse lead the accompanying doctor to take it back to the village once the expedition had come to an end, preserved in a skin packed with snow. Through his analysis of the body, the doctor found that the open ribcage was not from decay or trauma, but rather had developed that way. As a secondary set of shoulder blades and signs of an entirely different musculature system were found on the child’s back, the doctor concluded that the ribcage had functioned as a trap of sorts, with the soft organs as bait. Remnants of a tube can still be seen in the chest cavity, something that would perhaps secrete a substance to blind, damage or liquefy whatever was trapped within the ribcage-mouth, but this remains conjecture.

Spiderbaby

Originally preserved within the dense mud of the Manchac swamp, this mummified corpse was discovered after a hurricane hit the area in 1915. While rebuilding, a local fisherman found, cleaned and preserved the baby, before its eventual sale to a travelling circus two years later. This oddity was put on display in the circus freakshow under the moniker “Spiderbaby”, a name inspired by its prominent spider-like mutations. Once the circus went under, the mummy was purchased by a collector with a focus on medical anomalies. Her notes that remain suggest that the four extra appendages protruding from the child’s back are supported by four extra sets of shoulder blades, giving them possible functionality during life. A cavity for a third eye is present, but it appears to be more a fusion of an enlarged socket rather than a working mutation. The collector used this specimen, among others, as the starting point for much of her research into functional mutation and the evolutionary leaps they may provide.
